A tough-talking business man hires Lovejoy to recover a sixteenth-century samurai sword which has been stolen from him. Another dealer, Lovejoy's mentor Jim Leonard, buys the sword at an auction, but it is promptly stolen from him by Joanna, the daughter of the original owner. Lovejoy stays on the trail.

Dr. Linquist discovers an ancient Dragon Sword inhabited by a spirit known as Dao Lung. When the Shadow Master blasts the sword, deforming it, Vortex attaches it to the Dragon Copter, inadvertently allowing Dao Lung to act as an auto pilot. Dao Lung then helps the Dragons defeat the Shadow Warriors.

But he turns up anyway and takes a fall whilst riding, hits his head and dies. There is an enquiry and high levels of sleeping pills are found in his blood stream. Susanna is arrested. (‘The Laid Plans' in series 6 carries on from this) Archie Cutter has died and Claude asks Nick if he can look after his poultry and he agrees. But later Blaketon tells Nick, Archie was a notorious cock fighter.

The widow of a fugitive from the future calls Lambert with a request. She doesn't believe that her husband is dead, and asks that he investigate what has happened. Her husband worked as a jailer, but when he opposed the warden, he was interned himself. When Lambert shows up, asking questions, he is also imprisoned. The warden runs a very tight jail. The prisoners must dig for diamonds in a mine, and punishments for disobedience are severe. And Lambert of course has to release SELMA to his captors. Now it's a question of how he will get out of there before the warden decides to kill him.

Dawson has a new girlfriend, art historian Lauren Gale, and a new attitude on life. Unfortunately, Dawson arrives at Lauren's house one evening to witness her murder. We discover the murderer is Armand Thorne, benefactor of the Thorne Museum of Antiquities, who was being investigated by Lauren. MacLeod finds an ancient gold cross on display in Thorne's museum, a cross that had been stolen out from under his protection nearly two hundred years before. Armand Thorne, MacLeod discovers, is actually John Durgan, the Immortal trapper who murdered a frontier priest and stole the cross. MacLeod persuades Amanda to come out of cat-burglar retirement and help him to steal the cross from the museum in order to lure Thorne out of his heavily protected fortress. MacLeod confronts Thorne, taking his head, and finally gets fulfill his promise to return the Cross of St. Antoine.
