When he dies suddenly of a heart attack, the bitter rivalry between the three and Sandra, the wife of his heir, comes to the surface, with murderous consequences. To solve the mystery, Barnaby must unravel paternity questions about some of the residents of the hall, and find the legendary missing emeralds.

Everything is fine, until Wayne gets furious at Jonesy for taking away his fries under his mom's orders, so Wayne starts manhunting Jonesy around the mall. Also, to make matters worse, Jonesy is hired by Nikki's boyfriend to break up with her. Meanwhile, the escalator girls hold Jen's house keys and Jude's old skateboard hostage.

Francis receives a visit from Lois and Hal to celebrate his one-year anniversary of sobriety. However, when they attend one of his A.A. meetings, it's revealed that it was Lois who forced him to start drinking. When Annabeth has to prosecute a man for killing his mother-in-law, his defense attorney creates a case against his own wife by claiming she committed the murder in order to establish reasonable doubt for the jury. The judge throws out the defendant's testimony after his lawyer claims that he was not given legal counsel during his interrogation. When Annabeth learns of a hidden secret in the defendant's past which easily explains why he killed his mother-in-law, the defense tries to deliberately mislead the jury into believing the defendant's wife committed the murder in order to create doubt.

Monk tries to prove that an astronaut committed murder despite the suspect's seemingly airtight alibi: he was in space.
Brandy & Mr. Whiskers
Season 2, Episode 9
While on their way to an Amazon water park, Brandy and Mr. Whiskers witness the local lifeguards help another creature who had hurt its toe, though Brandy takes notice of the fact that the local animals all idolize the lifeguards. Brandy manages to join their ranks while Mr. Whiskers takes swimming lessons in hopes of aspiring to such, though Brandy has a secret of her own that may cause problems should she need to answer the call of duty.

When Margo sarcastically tells Mr. Whiskers that she's in love with him he attempts to find a way to win her heart, so he seeks Brandy's advice. However, Brandy mistakenly believes that Mr. Whiskers is actually in love with her, much to her dismay, so she attempts to convince him to never speak to the girl he loves again. However, things take a turn for the worse when Ed gets involved and begins to fight for Margo's affection, which causes Brandy to think Ed loves her as well, though will this love triangle manage to be resolved without offending the parties involved?

Meanwhile, Holly is worried she broke up with Vince too quickly, but having spent time at Vic's family reunion, she realizes she did the right thing.
